Structured Data Extraction
Extracting relational data together with its schema and relationships from a retiring application so records stay meaningful in the archive.
What Is Structured Data Extraction?
Structured data extraction is pulling data out of a retiring application in a way that preserves its structure: the tables, the fields and data types, the relationships between them, and the code tables that give values their meaning. The goal is not a pile of exported rows. It is a faithful copy of how the application understood its own data.
The distinction matters. A flat export can look complete while quietly discarding what makes the data usable: which line belongs to which invoice, what status code 4 means, which currency a value is denominated in. Extract only the values and the archive becomes a puzzle. Extract the values with their schema and relationships and it becomes a record.
The work varies by source. Relational databases can be read at the database layer. Older platforms are harder. Mainframe files such as VSAM datasets need record layouts, often defined in COBOL copybooks, to interpret them at all. Packaged applications may keep business rules in application code, so the relationships have to be inferred from documentation and logic, not read from the schema.
Key Points
- Structure travels with the data. Schema, data types, keys, and relationships are extracted alongside the values, not reconstructed later.
- Extract at the data layer where possible. Reading the source database directly is generally more complete and repeatable than capturing reports or screens.
- Code tables are essential. Lookup and reference tables are extracted so encoded values stay interpretable.
- Non-relational sources need layouts. Mainframe and file-based systems require record definitions to parse their data.
- Consistency matters. Extracting related data from a frozen source, or as a consistent snapshot, prevents relationships drifting mid-extraction.
Common Use Cases
ERP and finance systems
Transactions, ledgers, and master data are extracted with the relationships that let an auditor trace a figure back to its source.
Mainframe applications
Batch and transaction data held in flat files is parsed using copybook definitions and delivered as structured, queryable records.
Clinical and patient systems
Encounter, order, and result data is extracted with its clinical code sets intact, so historical records remain interpretable.
Structured Data Extraction vs. Related Concepts
Extraction is one stage of a larger pipeline, and one of several capture approaches.
DATA EXTRACTION
The general term for pulling data out of a source system. Structured data extraction is the relational case, defined by preserving schema and relationships.
ETL (EXTRACT, TRANSFORM, LOAD)
The full pipeline. Extraction is its first stage. ETL adds transformation and loading into a target.
UNSTRUCTURED DATA ARCHIVING
Preserves documents, images, and files. It deals with content, not relational structure, and usually runs alongside structured extraction in the same program.
